Birmingham Airport is to get a direct, non-stop route to Canada next summer, with Air Transat flying between Birmingham and Toronto from June 2027.

The Canadian airline will operate the route between Birmingham Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport from 23 June 2027, flying twice a week during the summer season. Tickets went on sale as soon as the route was announced.

No more trips to London or Manchester

Until now, holidaymakers and business travellers from the Midlands heading for eastern Canada have had to travel to Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester for a direct flight, or book a connection through hubs such as Dublin, Amsterdam or Frankfurt.

Through Air Transat's codeshare and joint venture with Porter Airlines, passengers landing in Toronto will be able to connect on a single ticket to destinations across Canada, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Montréal.

"Worth celebrating"

Matt Hazelwood, chief commercial officer at Birmingham Airport, said: "We are thrilled to be adding this new route from Birmingham Airport with Air Transat.

"Toronto is a destination people across the region have every reason to be excited about, and the fact they'll be able to fly there directly from their local airport is something worth celebrating. We're really proud to be making this happen and cannot wait for the first flight to take off next summer."

Sebastian Ponce, chief revenue officer at Transat, said: "The launch of our new Birmingham-Toronto service reflects Air Transat's commitment to making Canada more accessible from key regions across the UK.

"Travellers across the Midlands will benefit from a convenient non-stop flight to Toronto, together with onward connections to major destinations across Canada through our partnership with Porter Airlines. Birmingham is a natural addition to our UK network, and we look forward to welcoming our first passengers in June 2027."

Growing the long-haul network

Long-haul and transatlantic connections have been a major focus of the airport's plans for growth. Air Transat joins carriers serving destinations across the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa from Birmingham.

Toronto is Canada's largest city and home to a large British community, so the route should appeal to people visiting family and friends as well as to tourists and business travellers. For anyone planning a trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario or further afield, it means one less journey down the motorway before the holiday begins.

The route is the latest in a run of new destinations from Birmingham Airport, giving people in the city more choice to fly from their doorstep.
