Brandon McNulty has become the first American in 33 years to win the men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships, while Demi Vollering of the Netherlands took the women's title, capping a weekend of world championship racing in Montreal, Canada.

McNulty ends the wait

McNulty won Sunday's men's road race by 13 seconds from Australia's Michael Matthews. He is the first American to win the men's world road title since 1993, and earns the right to wear the rainbow jersey of world champion for the next year.

Vollering takes the women's title

On Saturday, Vollering outsprinted Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney to win the women's road race, with Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini taking the bronze medal. Vollering is one of the dominant riders in women's cycling, with a record of wins in the sport's biggest stage races and one-day classics.

A weekend of sport around the world

Elsewhere on Sunday, the Czech Republic beat Ukraine 2-0 in the final of the Billie Jean King Cup in Shenzhen, China, winning the women's team tennis competition for the 12th time and for the first time since 2018. Ukraine had reached their first final by beating the defending champions, Italy, 2-0 in the semi-finals, with Elina Svitolina defeating Jasmine Paolini.

At the Berlin Marathon, Guye Adola won the men's race and Tigst Assefa the women's, although Assefa suffered from cramp before she crossed the line. Berlin's fast, flat course is famous for world record attempts.

In Australian rules football, the Brisbane Lions beat the Fremantle Dockers by seven points in the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, winning a third premiership in a row and their sixth overall.

The rainbow jersey

World road race champions wear a white jersey with rainbow bands in road races for the following year, one of the most recognisable prizes in cycling.

Next year

The riders will defend their titles at next year's world championships, while the new road season begins again in the southern hemisphere early in the new year.
