The University of Birmingham has been shortlisted for University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards 2026, one of four shortlistings for the university.

The THE Awards are widely seen as the leading higher education awards in the UK and Ireland.

A landmark year

The nomination follows the university's 125th anniversary year. Highlights included the launch of its Education 125 programme, research income rising 11 per cent to a record £228m, investment in new academic talent through its 125th Anniversary Chairs and Fellows, and a renewed commitment to the city through the Birmingham Civic Agreement.

Dinosaurs on the shortlist

The university is also shortlisted for Research Project of the Year: STEM, for dinosaur research that is changing understanding of the Middle Jurassic period, carried out with Oxford University Museum of Natural History and the Natural History Museum in London. It is also in the running for Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year and for Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

"To be shortlisted for University of the Year, alongside recognition for the breadth and impact of our research and innovation, is a tremendous achievement for our entire University community," said Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Tickell.

The winners will be announced later in the year.
