Liberian Community in Birmingham
The Liberian community in Birmingham is one of the city's smallest, but its members bring a distinctive history and a strong faith to the city.
Where they come from
Liberia lies on the coast of West Africa and was founded in the 19th century by freed African Americans, becoming Africa's first independent republic in 1847. English is the official language. Liberians in Britain include families who came seeking safety during years of conflict, as well as students and professionals.
The community in numbers
At the 2021 Census, out of a city population of 1,144,919, 6,034 people living in the city had been born in Central and Western African countries other than Ghana and Nigeria, a group that includes Liberia.
Working for Birmingham
Liberian residents work in healthcare, social care, education and business, and many are studying and training to build new careers. Liberians are known for their resilience and their commitment to rebuilding their country, and many support education and health projects at home.
Birmingham is one of the youngest and most diverse cities in Europe, and its progress has always depended on people who chose to make it home. Its hospitals, schools and universities, its building sites, workshops, warehouses and kitchens all rely on skills brought from around the world. The Liberian community adds its own share to that effort, and takes pride in giving back to the city that welcomed it.
Culture and community life
Liberian churches are at the heart of community life, and Independence Day on 26 July is celebrated with pride. Jollof rice, palm butter soup and cassava dishes are shared at gatherings, and Liberian music and dance bring energy to every celebration.
Birmingham's strength lies in its variety, and the Liberian community is a welcome part of it. As the city continues to grow and change, that contribution will remain part of the story of a place that has always looked forward.
