How to start volunteering in Birmingham
From food banks to parkrun, a guide to finding a role that suits you.
Thousands of people in Birmingham give their time to charities and community groups every week, from food banks and hospitals to sports clubs and parks. If you have been thinking about volunteering, here is how to get started.
Find an opportunity
Volunteer Brum lists volunteering opportunities across the city, which you can search by location, interest and the amount of time you can give. Birmingham Voluntary Service Council also supports volunteering and works with hundreds of local organisations.
Many charities advertise roles on their own websites, and national sites such as Do-it list opportunities too.
Ideas for getting involved
- Helping at a food bank or community pantry
- Befriending older people who live alone
- Volunteering at a hospital or hospice
- Coaching at a sports club or helping at parkrun
- Litter picks and conservation work in parks and green spaces
- Supporting refugees and people seeking sanctuary, such as with language practice
- Mentoring young people or helping with reading in schools
How much time?
Volunteering does not have to mean a big commitment. Some roles need just a couple of hours a month, and there are one-off opportunities such as helping at events. Some roles can be done from home, such as telephone befriending.
What to expect
Most organisations will ask you to fill in a short application and meet them for a chat. Roles working with children or vulnerable adults usually need a DBS check, which the organisation will arrange. Good organisations provide training and support, and cover reasonable expenses.
The benefits
Volunteers often say they gain confidence, new friends and useful skills, and volunteering can help people back into work or towards a new career.
Young volunteers
Many organisations welcome younger volunteers, and schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award include a volunteering section.
