Where they come from

Honduras lies in Central America, with coasts on the Caribbean and the Pacific. It is home to the Maya ruins of Copan and the Bay Islands, famous for their coral reefs. Spanish is the official language. Hondurans in Britain include students, workers and families.

The community in numbers

At the 2021 Census, out of a city population of 1,144,919, 329 people living in the city had been born in Central America, a group that includes Honduras; and 976 Birmingham residents described their ethnic group as Hispanic or Latin American.

Working for Birmingham

Honduran residents work in fields such as hospitality, care, education and business, and many are bilingual in Spanish and English. They are known for their hard work and their commitment to supporting family at home.

Birmingham grew rich as the city of a thousand trades, and that spirit of making and doing is still strong. Today the trades sit alongside healthcare, education, finance, law, logistics and technology. The Honduran community brings energy to that mix, from people starting small businesses to those caring for patients, teaching in classrooms and keeping homes and workplaces in good repair.

Culture and community life

Baleadas, flour tortillas filled with beans and cheese, are the national street food, and the Garifuna people of the Caribbean coast have a culture of music and dance recognised by UNESCO. Independence Day on 15 September is celebrated with parades.

Birmingham's strength lies in its variety, and the Honduran community is a welcome part of it. As the city continues to grow and change, that contribution will remain part of the story of a place that has always looked forward.
