Gas network company Cadent is expanding its national distribution centre in Erdington, creating around 100 new jobs in Birmingham.

The firm has signed a 10-year lease on an 80,000 sq ft unit, known as DC4, at the Bromford Gate industrial park, right next to its existing base. Fit-out work is already under way, and the new site is expected to be up and running in early 2027.

Growing in Birmingham

Cadent is the UK's largest gas distribution network, managing 82,000 miles of pipes across the North West, the Midlands, the East of England and London. The Birmingham expansion will take its UK workforce to more than 6,000.

Robert Martin, real estate strategy manager at Cadent, said: "Bromford Gate is in a prime position for national distribution.

"With Birmingham being an important location for Cadent, the availability of the site was both well-timed and well-placed.

"We progressed quickly to secure the unit and look forward to being operational on completion of the fit out works."

A full industrial park

Prologis UK, which owns and runs Bromford Gate, said the deal marks the start of a new relationship between the two companies. The agreement brings the park up to full occupancy.

Tom Price, leasing director at Prologis UK, said: "Cadent already has an established presence at Bromford Gate, so DC4 was a natural fit to complement its existing distribution activities.

"Our teams worked closely to progress leasing discussions at pace, and we're delighted to begin this new relationship."

Other tenants at Bromford Gate include the carmaker Stellantis, the vertical farming business Fischer Farms and the UK head office of Claire's Accessories.

Why it matters

Erdington and the surrounding area sit close to the M6 and the city's motorway network, which has long made the Tyburn and Bromford corridor attractive to logistics and distribution businesses that need to reach the whole country quickly.

A hundred new jobs is a welcome boost for the area. Distribution centres need a wide range of staff, from warehouse and transport roles to planning, maintenance and management, and many of those jobs are likely to be filled by people living nearby.

It comes as Erdington is also in line for investment in its high street. The town centre is one of nine local centres sharing £8.5 million of High Street Growth and Incubator funding from the combined authority, alongside Northfield and Soho Road in Birmingham.

The expansion is also a vote of confidence in Birmingham as a place to run a national operation from. With the new unit due to open in early 2027, recruitment for the roles is likely to follow as the fit-out nears completion.
