An amber heat-health alert is in force across the region, including Birmingham, from midday on Tuesday 11 August until 9pm on Friday 14 August.

The UK Health Security Agency issued the alert because of the risk extreme heat poses to health, particularly for older people, babies and young children and people with long-term health conditions.

Travelling in the heat

Transport operators are warning of possible disruption, including delays, cancellations and short-notice timetable changes. Passengers are advised to:

  • check services before setting off and allow extra time;
  • carry water and wear light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat;
  • travel during cooler parts of the day where possible;
  • leave priority seats for those who need them most.

Drivers should check tyres, oil, coolant and screen wash before long journeys, and never leave anyone, especially babies, young children or animals, in a parked car.

People walking or cycling are advised to travel before 11am or after 3pm, avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day, and use shade and sunscreen.

Know the signs

Heat exhaustion can cause dizziness, headaches, feeling sick and intense thirst. Anyone affected should move somewhere cool, drink fluids and rest. For advice, use NHS 111; in an emergency, call 999.
